What Is the Recommended Timeline for Pediatric Eye Exams?

As parents, we carefully track our children’s milestones - from their first steps to their first day of school. But one important milestone that’s often overlooked is routine eye care. Clear vision plays a critical role in learning, development, and confidence. At eyeDOC OPTOMETRY, we believe proactive pediatric eye care is one of the most important investments you can make in your child’s future.

So, when should your child have their eyes examined? Here’s what you need to know.

Why Early Eye Exams Matter

Children don’t always realize when their vision isn’t normal. They may assume everyone sees the way they do, even if their vision is blurry or strained. Undetected vision problems can impact reading skills, attention span, coordination, and overall academic performance.

Comprehensive pediatric eye exams help detect:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Eye alignment issues (strabismus)

Early detection allows for more effective and often simpler treatment.

The Recommended Pediatric Eye Exam Timeline

Newborn Screening - Shortly after birth, newborns receive a basic vision screening in the hospital. This typically includes a red reflex test and a quick external evaluation to check for obvious abnormalities such as congenital cataracts or structural concerns.

While this screening is important, it is limited in scope. It does not replace a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist during infancy.

First Comprehensive Exam: 6–12 Months - Between 6 and 12 months, babies should have their first full eye exam. This visit evaluates eye health, alignment, tracking, and early visual development.

Your optometrist will assess how the pupils respond to light, whether your baby can fixate on and follow objects, and how they respond to high-contrast visual targets. These gentle, non-invasive tests help ensure the visual system is developing properly during this critical stage.

Second Exam: Around Age 3 - A second exam is recommended at around age 3. At this stage, children are developing important visual skills that support early learning.

This visit evaluates visual clarity, depth perception, eye coordination, and focusing abilities. Catching issues at this age can prevent them from affecting preschool and early education experiences.

Third Exam: Before Kindergarten (Ages 5–6) - Before starting kindergarten, children should have another comprehensive eye exam. Since much of classroom learning is visual, it’s essential that children enter school with strong visual skills.

This exam ensures your child is prepared for reading, writing, and increased screen use.

Annual Exams During School Years - Once children begin school, yearly eye exams are recommended. Vision can change quickly during growth spurts, especially with increased time spent on digital devices and close-up tasks.

Annual visits allow us to monitor prescription changes, assess eye health, and discuss options such as myopia management if needed.

Are School Vision Screenings Enough?

School screenings can be helpful, but they are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. Screenings typically check only distance vision and may miss issues related to focusing, tracking, or overall eye health.

A full eye exam at eyeDOC OPTOMETRY evaluates the entire visual system to ensure nothing is overlooked.

When to Schedule an Exam Sooner

In addition to following the recommended timeline, schedule an appointment if your child shows signs such as:

  • Frequent squinting or eye rubbing
  • Complaints of headaches
  • Sitting very close to screens
  • Difficulty concentrating or reading
